The Whole Country is Red

Overview

The Whole Country is Red (全国山河一片红) is one of the most legendary and valuable stamps in Chinese philately. Issued on November 24, 1968, during the height of the Cultural Revolution, the stamp was supposed to celebrate the 'complete victory' of the revolution and the establishment of revolutionary committees across China's provinces. Designed by Wan Weisheng, the stamp depicts a map of China bathed in a brilliant red hue, with smiling workers, farmers, and soldiers holding Chairman Mao's 'Little Red Book'. However, a colossal political error was made: the island of Taiwan was left white, inadvertently 'excluding' it from the 'Red' nation. The oversight was noticed within hours of its release, prompting a furious nationwide recall. Postal workers were ordered to stop selling them immediately. Only a tiny fraction made it to the public. Today, the stamp exists in two sizes. The 'small' version is incredibly rare, but the unissued 'large' version (discarded during the design phase) is even rarer, with only about 9 copies known to exist, making it a multi-million-dollar item.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 'The Whole Country is Red' stamp so expensive?

Because it was withdrawn on its first day of issue due to a politically sensitive map error (leaving Taiwan unshaded), meaning very few copies survived the Chinese government's rapid recall.

What is the difference between the 'Large' and 'Small' versions?

The 'Large' version is twice the size and was an unissued preliminary design. Both have the same map error, but the Large version is monumentally rarer, with only 8-9 copies ever surviving.
