Gronchi Rosa

Overview

The 1961 'Gronchi Rosa' (Pink Gronchi) is arguably the most famous modern stamp from Italy and a classic example of cartographic crisis. To commemorate Italian President Giovanni Gronchi's state visit to three South American countries, Italy issued a set of three stamps. The high value, the 205-lire pink stamp intended to cover airmail to Peru, featured an aviation map of South America with the destination country highlighted. However, the designer used an outdated map. The stamp depicted Peru's borders prior to its 1941 war with Ecuador, inadvertently handing a massive chunk of the Amazon basin to Peru's neighbors. Enraged Peruvian officials immediately lodged a severe diplomatic protest with the Italian ambassador. Deeply embarrassed to have insulted the host country right before the President's arrival, the Italian government aggressively recalled all unsold stamps from post offices across Italy within hours of issue. They rapidly printed an identical replacement stamp in a completely different color (gray) with corrected borders. About 79,000 pink copies had already been sold, creating an instant public frenzy.

Design & Technical Details

A rose-lilac (pink) colored stamp featuring an airplane flying over the Atlantic, bridging a small map of Italy with a map of South America. The country of Peru is highlighted darkly, but the border drawn was geographically inaccurate.

Historical Facts

  • The stamp caused a genuine international diplomatic crisis between Italy and Peru.
  • The Italian government attempted to 'cover up' the mistake by sending agents to intercept mail in transit and paste the corrected gray stamp directly over the pink one.
  • Covers (envelopes) featuring the pink stamp that successfully managed to cross the Atlantic undiscovered are highly treasured.
  • The massive media coverage in 1961 sparked a huge wave of new stamp collectors in Italy.

How to Identify This Stamp

If you believe you may have found a Gronchi Rosa, here are key identification characteristics to check:

  • The distinctive pink color (as opposed to the corrected gray) easily identifies the error.
  • Due to intense local demand, the Italian black market was flooded with sophisticated counterfeits in the 1960s and 70s. Look for crisp margins and proper watermark alignment.
